About · For God and Country
A century of veterans serving Buckeye.
Hazelton-Butler Post 53 was chartered in 1929 in the small farming town of Buckeye, Arizona. Nearly a hundred years later, we are still on the corner of Narramore — caring for veterans, military families, and the community.
The Post is named for two World War I veterans of the Buckeye Valley: Louis B. Hazelton, recognized as the first young man from Buckeye killed in World War I, and Butler. Hazelton's name lives on today at the Louis B. Hazelton Memorial Cemetery — established by Post 53 in 1938 and transferred to the town in 1947.
In 2024 we celebrated 95 years of charter — a quiet, dignified evening of displays, photos, and memorabilia covering three eras of Post leadership: the founders of the 1930s, the members who revitalized the post in the early 2000s, and those who have rebuilt and stewarded our current facilities since 2010.
Today, more than 125 members of Post 53, Auxiliary Unit #53, and the Sons of the American Legion meet at 402 E Narramore Ave. Add the Legion Riders Post 53, our American Legion Baseball Buckeye Aces, and the Buckeye Community Veterans Service Center, and you have one building doing the work of a small army.
Note: Some historical details on this page (including the Butler namesake) are still being researched and verified by the Post historian. If you can help, please contact the Post.
